Project background

Blitz.gg is a companion app for PC gamers that provides assistance, coaching and in-depth statistics to help players win. In order to grow the userbase within Teamfight Tactics (TFT), leadership at Blitz wanted to create an unique set of features that not only coach players as well as provide real-time insights into everyone’s gameplay. Specifically, the TFT community needed a solution that not only provided general gaming insights but also tailored advice to enhance individual gameplay strategies. I worked as the Product Designer Technologist in this role to research, design and iterate within the TFT vertical of the company.

Leadership Experience

Served as the Team Lead for the Teamfight Tactics (TFT) vertical, spearheading cross-functional collaborations with developers, designers, and executives. My leadership in fostering collaboration between developers and stakeholders resulted in faster feature deployment cycle, directly enhancing the app's user experience.

Key Responsibilities

Engineered foundational elements and modular components for in-game overlays, post-match analysis screens, and comprehensive game guides.

  • Orchestrated user-centered research to inform and refine features related to TFT.

  • Directed a nimble development team of three, overseeing daily feature implementation.

Achievements

  • Through targeted feature developments and UX improvements, I led the initiative that tripled our daily active users from 50K to 150K.

  • Engaged in weekly design huddles, contributing to broader team objectives and collective brainstorming.

Problem Statement

Teamfight Tactics poses a steep learning curve for players. While various tools and guides exist, there remains a void for an all-encompassing coaching platform that delivers real-time statistics, strategic recommendations, and in-depth insights tailored to players at all skill levels. Existing market solutions fall short of fulfilling these multi-tiered needs. Blitz.gg fills this gap by offering a personalized coaching experience, combining real-time stats with adaptive strategies, unmatched by any other platform.

Design Process

User Research

In order to understand the needs and pain points of TFT players, I interviewed users on discord who are familiar with Blitz across different skill levels.

Brainstorming

After consolidating the feedback from users, I organized the notes into distinct findings and opportunity areas. From there, I worked in Figma to create wireframes of 15+ features.

One user noted, “I struggle with adapting strategies early game to late game” which inspired the development of our early game compositions feature in the app.

Validation

To understand which of the features are the most valuable, we surveyed 248 users and have them rank each feature from 1 to 7 in terms of usefulness. This provided valuable insight as to features that should be implemented first.

User rankings during the validation phase highlighted the demand for in-depth post-match analysis, leading us to prioritize this feature in the final release.

  • 6 out of 7 of our participants who completed the full study said they would continue using Blitz for TFT after the the study concluded and it helped them improve.

  • An unexpected insight was that even experienced players benefitted significantly from our guides, prompting us to enhance these features in subsequent updates.

Longitudinal Study

  • 11 participants were recruited from Reddit and our discord

  • 7 participants completed the entire study

  • Our participants played 90 games of TFT that we measured

  • Rank: At the start of our study, 3 players were platinum, 3 were gold, and 1 was silver

Experience: 4 of our participants have played TFT for less than 3 months, while 3 have played for more than 1 year.
